There Was One - there Was None
یکی بود یکی نبود
Dir. Yasmin Shahbarami
Release Date: 2025
Two young Iranian women now living worlds apart - one in Iran, one in The
Netherlands - still exchange video messages about their daily lives, desires and complex struggles. Fleeting glimpses of the past reveal the intimacy that still binds them, while a final conversation carries a quiet tension, reflecting the subtle drift of their lives and selves.
Yasmin Shahbarami | Writer & Director
Yasmin is a multidisciplinary artist, whose bicultural upbringing between Iran and the Netherlands fostered an early fascination with storytelling and visual language. With a background in the theatre industry in Iran, she went on to study Fine Arts before graduating in Audio-Visual Design in Rotterdam.
Her work moves through themes of identity, social and political structures, and psychological–spiritual inquiry. She explores how experimental and narrative forms can blur, disrupt, and reorient perception. Weaving her lived experiences into her projects, and allowing the work to fold back into daily life, she approaches art as an ongoing dialogue between personal history and the world around her.
